Discovery : Constructing a Concept-Based Story

  • RRP $34.50

Discovery: Constructing a Concept-Based Story is designed to support teachers and students with the writing task for the HSC in the Area of Study 2015-2020. The concept of discovery is introduced and the text explores its three dimensions- self- discovery, discovery of place and discovery of cultural knowledge. Students are encouraged to think in terms of cultural significant issues in the contemporary world and select an inspiring story idea that is associated with aspects of these issues. This book is mainly centered on an exemplary self-discovery story entitled 'Graveyard'. It is written in response to Michael Mucci's illustration called 'The Bridge' and the way the story engages with the visual stimulus is explained in detail. The book discusses narrative voice, characterisation, dialogue, structure and setting thoroughly, both in a general way and in terms of how the model story is developed. Collaborative exercises on narrative voice, dialogue and sentence building in description are provided. Marking criteria is discussed in detail with the Australian curriculum in mind.

Target Audience

This book is written specifically for students who are aiming to produce a sophisticated narrative for their HSC Examination. It s clearly written and makes complex ideas accessible. Information and explanations are presented in convenient double page format for photocopying or scanning.
