Constructing A Concept-Based Story : Changing Self
Constructing a concept based story: Changing Self is designed to help students develop a narrative that is based on an issue or an aspect of the concept of Changing Self. The purpose of the narrative is to convey an understanding of the concept. The concept of Changing Self is discussed in the book and students are encouraged to develop their intellectual framework which surrounds the concept. Then the student’s understanding of a relevant story idea is developed. The way that this is done is highlighted through an explained example. This explanation includes ways of responding to different types of story stimuli, especially the visual stimulus. Proformas are included so that students can plan their story’s message and values, its narrative structure and to think about how they want to use language to position their readers. There are three chapters that are designed to develop a student’s ability to construct a story. These include: linking the protagonist with the reader, establishing a single incident and using language imaginatively. ‘A’ range stories are included in the explanations. Target Audience This book is clearly written and makes complex ideas accessible and difficult skills manageable. It is mainly aimed at senior students but it can be used in the middle school. It may be used as a complete program, or sections of it may be included in concept- based units, such as Growing Up, Relationships and Family. ISBN 9780980776904 |
