Constructing a concept based story: Belonging is designed to help students develop a narrative that is based on an issue or an aspect of the concept of Belonging. The purpose of the narrative is to convey an understanding of the concept. In the book, the concept of Belonging is discussed and students are encouraged to develop their intellectual framework surrounding the concept. Then , the student’s understanding of a relevant story idea is developed. The way that this is done is highlighted through an explained example. This explanation includes ways of responding to different types of story stimuli, especially the visual stimulus. Proformas are included so that students can plan their story’s message and values, its narrative structure and to think about how they want to use language to position their readers. There are three chapters that are designed to develop a student’s ability to construct a story. These include: linking the protagonist with the reader, establishing a single incident and using language imaginatively. ‘A’ range stories are included in the explanations.

Target Audience

This book is clearly written, makes complex ideas accessible and difficult skills manageable. It is mainly aimed at senior students, but it can be used in the middle school. It may be used as a complete program, or sections of it may be included in concept- based units such as Self, Prejudice, Growing Up, Relationships and the Family.
